Biscuits and gravy casserole is a comforting and hearty breakfast dish that combines two Southern classics into one delicious bake. Here’s a basic recipe for making a biscuits and gravy casserole:

Ingredients:

For the Biscuits:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

3/4 cup milk or buttermilk

For the Gravy:

1 pound breakfast sausage (like pork or turkey)

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

3-4 cups milk

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional: Red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper for a little heat

1.Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2.Make the Biscuit Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add the milk, stirring until the dough comes together. Turn out onto a floured surface and gently knead a few times, then roll or press the dough to about 1-inch thickness.

3.Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula, until fully cooked. Remove the cooked sausage with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.

4.Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the sausage drippings in the skillet and whisk to create a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes. Gradually pour in the milk while continuously whisking to avoid lumps. Cook the mixture until it thickens into a gravy. Season with salt, pepper, and optional spices if desired. Stir the cooked sausage back into the gravy.

5.Assemble: Cut the biscuit dough into small squares or use a biscuit cutter to cut out rounds. Place half of them at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour the sausage gravy over the biscuits in the dish. Top with the remaining biscuit dough.

6.Bake: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.

7.Serve: Remove from the oven and let the casserole set for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy while warm!

Note: You can also add cheese, cooked bacon, or other favorite breakfast ingredients to customize the dish to your liking.
